Meet David!
Born in Fort Dix, New Jersey, David Wilkerson is the son of Sergeant First Class Richard and Helen Wilkerson. Growing up attending public schools, David graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University with a degree in accounting. After graduation, David moved to Cobb County to begin his professional career at the Big 4 accounting firm, Deloitte & Touche, where he earned his CPA credentials.
Work with Democratic Party
David has remained active with the Democratic Party from his time with the Young Democrats to his service as a member of the State Committee. He has volunteered on numerous election campaigns and served in various leadership positions within the Democratic Party. He was the first African American elected as Chairman of the Cobb County Democratic Party.
Legislative Leadership
David Wilkerson was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2010, representing the 38th District, which includes Austell, Mableton, and Powder Springs in Cobb County. Since then, he has been a strong advocate for his community, serving on committees such as Education, Juvenile Justice, Retirement, and Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight.
David has held significant leadership roles, including Treasurer for the Democratic Caucus and Democratic Whip. In 2018, he made history as the first African American to be elected Chairman of the Cobb County Legislative Delegation.
A champion for the middle class, David is actively involved in the Working Families Caucus and has advocated for fully funding K-12 education and making college more affordable. He successfully fought against cuts to Advanced Placement funding that would have affected families in need.
David's commitment to public service stems from his father's influence, who after retiring from the Army founded the John Addison Wilkerson (JAWS) Memorial Boys Club in Virginia, which was named in memory of his own father. David's volunteer activities extend to various organizations, including the Georgia Society of CPAs, local school foundations, and non-profit boards.
Community Service
Representative Wilkerson has received numerous awards for his dedicated service, including honors from the Georgia School Counselor Association, Georgia Association of Educators, and the Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education (Georgia ACTE).
Family Time
Outside of his political and community work, David is a devoted husband to Penny and a proud father of two adult children. They reside in Powder Springs, where they were actively involved in Cobb County public schools, volunteering and supporting local education initiatives. David enjoys a variety of sports and coached youth soccer.
